It’s a new day, it’s a beautiful day

It’s a new day, it’s a beautiful day, as Danny Beaton would tell us.
This is how the media covered the day we won the first battle. The war to protect the water continues.
Lid put on dump site – Toronto Sun
Victory for foes of dump – Toronto Star
County votes for one-year moratorium on Site 41 dump – CTV
Contentious landfill put on hold – Globe and Mail. Kudos to the Globe for mentioning that the site was rejected by an environmental assessment and was approved only after an unusual order-in-council by the Liberal government of former premier David Peterson – a detail the County’s chronology omits
Landfill on hold – Barrie Examiner
Bust at Site 41 – Danny Beaton in Now Magazine. This is pre-vote but it has a useful video of Environment Minister John Gerretsen talking to protestors

I read this in the Toronto Sun.
“At this juncture, Simcoe Council has already invested upward of $12 million in the site and now, because of the moratorium, it will be forced to spend $500,000 to mothball the site for the winter — stop the de-watering process (2 million litres a day), replace the clay that has already been excavated and then, if Little’s motion doesn’t kill the project altogether in a month’s time, spend another $500,000 to prepare the site for garbage, if and when the moratorium is lifted and the project eventually proceeds.”

Why does this sound like they’re still going to be allowed to finish the dump, ‘just in case’???

Guergis’s reaction was interesting: he hates democracy so much that he now believes that the county should not have any power to make decisions on waste disposal.

He evidently feels that we should be ruled by a dictator advised by ‘experts.’

How this man ever got elected is a complete mystery to me.

Bertolt Brecht once suggested the East German government had passed a motion of No Confidence in the people. But he was joking: Guergis meant it, he truly believes that he knows better than the thousands of people, from every walk of Canadian life, who had concluded that Site 41 is a bad idea.

Does he imagine that people have worked so hard, risked so much, made so many real sacrifices, simply for the excitement?

His arrogant and petty reaction to this decision ought to mark the end of his political career. He was already toast, now he is ashes.

Let’s take back our resources – stop calling them “garbage” – develop local jobs; reuse and repair materials; and put an end to the never- ending drain of public money to debate the options of burn or bury.
There’s so much more to do but we know from our hard work that we have the ability to achieve anything we set out to when we work together as a team and stay focused on a goal.
    Let’s go for Zero Waste!

Please Please if he moves next into York region I will need all your help to keep him out of any political office there. He is a danger to all of us.

Let’s hope that yesterday was the first day of the end of the Guergis political dynasty in Simcoe County. Like all dynasties they get arrogant. Let’s make sure Tony’s brother and cousin Helena follow him into political oblivian as well.

  6. Karen says:

I agree with you Chris. Guergis clearly hates democracy, luckily “the people” have spoken! His constituents should beware!

  7. Stephen says:

Vicki Monague is right, the fight is not over.
Don’t turn your back on these people for a second, until it is done for good and crops are growing again in the fields!!

    Keep up the good work!!

  8. Steve says:

Please publish the vote for thoses who were not there.

It’s a new day, it’s a beautiful day..but we have only won the battle..now we have to keep fighting and win the war to close the dump permanently and get rid of Guergis and his goon squad at the county office.

And we can’t stop there..we need to also fight for change both at the provincial and federal level as well. Let’s get rid of McGuinty and Harper and vote GREEN next time and give them a chance.

    it’s a day of triumph.

i’m thinking, perhaps doing the right thing, might become habit forming.

i suggest the members of this very successful organization not disband.
but focus there strengh on this poousy dump problem next.
and eventualy ,every other leaking dump in simcoe county .
since we have the cleanest water in the world i think it obligates us to act accordingly .

I also was very surprised at how Guergis handled the council meeting – I don’t think he was professional in his actions or language to both the council members and viewing public, I really could not believe it. If we are to ask our children to believe in democracy – DON’T LET THEM SEE HIM IN ACTION – I do believe that Simcoe Council can handle ‘Waste Management’ issue’s, even more so because we are the ones creating the waste problem – Time to work towards ZERO WASTE. Congratulations to Simcoe for the improvement from 30 to 50 % reduction with the green recycle program – great stuff, but remember the goal needs to be ZERO WASTE.
