Solid Waste and Recycling Magazine
An exciting, inaugural Canadian Waste Sector Symposium will be taking place in Toronto from November 1 to 3, 2010 at the Westin Bristol Place Toronto Airport Hotel, in conjunction with the Canadian Waste & Recycling Expo (being held at the International Centre from November 3 to 4, 2010).
This two-and-a-half day event, sponsored by the Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA), will include options for three tours (Composting & Organics Processing; MRF’s and Transfer Stations; Electronics Recycling, Collection and Processing), and sessions covering a variety of topics — Hazardous Waste Management, Organic Waste Management, EPR & Waste Sector Servicing, Green Energy, Waste Disposal & Transfer, Waste Management General Issues, and Waste Audits and Servicing.
OWMA is also pleased to announce a special keynote dinner speaker — Gordon McGuinty.
An entrepreneur, Gordon McGuinty was responsible for the Rail Cycle North consortium, which included some of North America’s largest rail and waste corporations and was awarded the largest waste management contract in Canada.
For 14 years, McGuinty was the force behind the Adams Mine landfill project as a solution to Ontario’s garbage disposal crisis. Today, when he is not speaking to interested audiences, he divides his time between his residence in the mountains of Alberta and his office in Ontario.
McGuinty will soon be starting a regular blog for Solid Waste & Recycling magazine’s website.

Source Water Schmource Water
August 17th, 2010
By Krystyn Tully and Joanna Bull, Waterkeeper.ca Weekly
The Ontario government introduced the Clean Water Act in 2006. The Act divides the province into forty Source Protection Areas, mainly based on conservation authority boundaries, and creates an administrative apparatus meant to identify and address threats to drinking water supplies (“source water”).
As a charity that seeks to protect clean, natural drinking water supplies throughout our watershed, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper often relies on legal tools and remedies to protect or promote clean water. You’d think that we would care a whole lot about the Clean Water Act. But we don’t, really.

“Disposal” now called “recycling – neither makes sense for nuclear waste
August 16th, 2010
From Gordon Edwards Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility
During the early decades of the nuclear age, people were told (and are still being told) that all nuclear waste will undergo “disposal” — a word with no scientific definition, for humans have never successfully “disposed” of anything.
But in recent years, the nuclear industry has significantly altered its previous doctrine. The new buzz-word is “recycling”. The industry, it seems, wants some of the “good vibes” associated with Environmentalism’s “3 Rs” — Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
But recycling is a deceptive word to use, for the nuclear industry wants to gradually disseminate brand new highly dangerous waste materials — radioactive species which never existed before — into general circulation, as invisible contaminants.
These wastes, previously intended for permanent storage, are now intended to be shipped across lakes, oceans, and continents so that the companies who created them can lower their storage costs. They want to reduce the volume of wasteby spreading it around, and “decontaminating” it as they go.
But decontaminating is by no means perfect. Radioactivity has to go somewhere — into the air, into the water, into the soil . . . and increasingly, into ordinary items of commerce.
Thus everyone on earth will soon be receiving their own personalallotment of radioactive plutonium, cesium-137, cobalt-60, iron-55, nickel-63, and many other radioactive waste materialsin their household purchases — a gift from the nuclear industry.
The following text deals with a radioactive metal “recycling”facility in Northern England (Cumbria) that was licensed inFebruary 2008 against the wishes of many local inhabitants.
The plant is operated by Studsvik of Sweden.
Bruce Power’s current plan to ship 16 radioactive steam generators, each the size of a school bus, through the Great Lakes, along the St. Lawrence River, and across the Atlantic Ocean to Sweden, is for the express purpose of having Studsvik, there, make 90 percent of the contaminated metal available for “unrestricted use”.

Showing disrespect for rural and small town Canada seems to keep the Harper government busier than a dog at a tree farm
August 15th, 2010
A commentary by Grant Robertson
It is now abundantly clear that the Harper government was never committed to working for the best interests of farmers, small business owners, communities and much of rural and small town Canada, and worse, that this government disrespects us and see us as little more than a quaint relic of the past. Those are strong words I know, but how else do you explain the comments from this government around the closing of Canada’s prison farms? Despite almost 50 years of verifiable success of the program the Harper government, in its increasingly strident ideological way, is closing down these farms and planning to spend billions on new super-prisons. These farms have provided practical work experience, but even more importantly they have helped to instil a much missing work ethic in inmates that has made a vast difference in their lives.

Elmvale Water Festival Saturday August 21 – great speakers, tradeshow, banquet…
August 13th, 2010
To: Friends of the Elmvale Water Festival
Dear Friends,
The 2010 Elmvale Water Festival is just two weeks away, and I hope to see you there on SATURDAY AUGUST 21, 2010. Our event this year will be bigger and better than ever.
BAYSHORE BROADCASTING
This year, the Elmvale Water Festival is being presented by Bayshore Broadcasting: they have not only jumped on board to help organize the event, but they have added an environmental trade show, awards banquet, and 100 mile luncheon diet to the mix this year. I have seen the menu for the 100 mile luncheon and it sounds delicious !
ACTIVITIES
With leading speakers and filmmakers, games and activities for children (including pony rides and petting zoo), great music and excellent food, it will be a fun way to spend a summer Saturday, meet old friends and make new ones. Of course there will be all you can drink for free, all day, pure spring water which we give away for free in non-toxic, dishwasher-safe, reusable polypropylene Enviroclear Smart Bottle. A new Elmvale Water Festival SIGG bottle will be available too ! We are also very excited about a very special item in our Silent Auction: a numbered, limited edition print of THE LORAX by Dr. Suess.
Opening the 2010 Elmvale Water Festival will be a Native Water Ceremony, a moving experience you will not want to miss, so come early.
SPEAKERS AND FILMS
We are honoured that our keynote speaker would travel all the way from Canmore, Alberta, to join us for our event: Robert Sandford will be talking about the impacts of climate change on western North America, and signing copies of his latest book “Restoring the Flow. Confronting the Worlds Water Woes”. Bob Sandford is the Canadian Chair of the United Nations International Decade “Water for Life”, a national partnership initiative that aims to advance long-term water quality and availability issues in response to climate change in this country and abroad.
Also, Kevin McMahon will be presenting his award-winning documentary “Waterlife” about the Great Lakes. Kevin is the director of the film which just won the Special Jury Prize at the 2009 Hot Docs film festival.
James Gordon of Wellington Water Watchers will be speaking on “Sustainability of Municipal Water Supplies: The Story of the Wellington Water Watchers”
THANKS TO VOLUNTEERS, OLD AND NEW
With three successful Elmvale Water Festivals behind us, this is a chance for me to thank each of you who have helped us in the past.
If you have not yet rolled up your sleeves to help run our event, you have a new chance to do so, as we are still looking for volunteers to help. Please contact Mike Powell at mike@elmvale.org for details or to join the team.
If you have not yet attended an Elmvale Water Festival, more information can be found at our web site www.elmvale.org. Please be sure to pass along this invitation to friends and family, and help us to get out the word our event. The groundwater in Elmvale which emanates from its artesian springs is fantastic: come out and help us celebrate !
The Elmvale Water Festival is hosted by the Elmvale Foundation, a federally registered charity for environmental education.
As a growing event which has drawn several thousand visitors to the area during the past three years, I very much hope that you will join us in the fun.
Thanks very much, and hope to see you in Elmvale on SATURDAY AUGUST 21, 2010.
Best regards
William Shotyk,
President
